Choral music education has enjoyed a long, rich tradition at Jamestown High
School. The J.H.S. A Cappella Choir was founded in 1924 by Ebba H. Goranson, who directed
the choir for 34 years. Donald B. Bube´ was the second conductor of the choir and he served as
choral director for 23 years. After 21 years of service, Brian A. Bogey recently retired as the
A Cappella's third director. Norman D. Lydell began his tenure as director in the Fall of 2003.
A Cappella Choir has become known as the "Choir of Cathedrals". They have sung in the National
Shrine Basilica in Washington, D.C; New York City's famed Saint Patrick's Cathedral and St.
Peter's Lutheran Church; St. Michael's R.C. Cathedral in Toronto, Canada and Saint James
Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago. The Choir has a ten-day concert tour of Austria, Germany and
Italy in 1987, singing at St. Stephan's Cathedral in Vienna, (home of the Vienna Boys Choir);
the Basilica in Innsbrook; and the Cathedral in Salzburg, where Mozart was parish musician. In
1999, the Choir's Concert Tour to England allowed them to sing at Saint Paul's Cathedral,
Westminster Cathedral & Salisbury Cathedral. In April, 2001, the choir sang at Saint Anne de
Beaupre and Notre Dame Basilica in Quebec City, Canada. In spring of 2003 the choir traveled to
New York City where they performed in concert at Saint John the Divine Cathedral, the third largest
cathedral in the world; the famous Park Avenue United Methodist Church and the historic Saint
Peters Lutheran Church. Most recently the A Cappella Choir traveled to Boston, Massachusetts,
performing at the historic Old North Church and participating in a Master Class at Harvard
University
Other choral performing organizations at Jamestown High School include the Mixed Chorus, Girls
Chorus, Men of Tomorrow, The Ladies of Today and the select Madrigal Singers. The A Cappella
Choir makes a double CD recording annually with recorded excerpts taken from the traditional A
Cappella Vespers as Christmas and from the Spring Choral Concert. They have earned superior
ratings at the NYSSMA Choral Competition Festivals throughout the years.
